Rohrig delivers expansion for Moranbah Community Workers Club

30 June 2025

Rohrig recently completed the refurbishment and expansion of the Moranbah Community Workers Club, a favourite among locals in the regional Queensland town. This significant project future proofed the venue, enabling it to cater to growing patronage while continuing to give back to the community.

The Moranbah Community Workers Club is well known for its cold beer and hearty meals, but it’s also a community pillar, having donated more than $700,000 over the past decade. Rohrig previously delivered Stage 2 of the club’s Master Plan in 2013, upgrading the gaming and sports bar, and was proud to return to deliver Stage 4.

BSPN Architecture led the latest design phase, which focused on delivering a more expansive and welcoming community venue that could accommodate increased demand. The redesign extended the existing building to include a larger function room, a modernised main bar, a full-size commercial kitchen, new staff offices and a storeroom. Externally, a larger carpark was also constructed.

Having previously worked with the client, our team entered the project with a detailed understanding of the venue and its Master Plan. Before starting on site, we undertook 3D LiDAR scanning to map the existing structure, ensuring seamless integration of the extension and improving planning accuracy and efficiency.

Rohrig was also closely involved in the early contractor involvement process, which was key to unlocking the project’s viability. We collaborated with the client to adjust the scope and engaged local suppliers and trades to add further value.

Works commenced with essential electrical upgrades, including the installation of a new transformer and power diversions. These early works ensured the club could remain fully operational throughout construction.

The team is well versed in live environment delivery and took extra care to ensure patrons could continue to enjoy the venue. This included staged programming, defined safe access points, and physical separation from construction zones so it remained business as usual.

The existing function room was stripped and upgraded, including a refreshed main bar. At the same time, the kitchen and offices were demolished and a new suspended slab was poured, forming the roof of the new section and setting the foundation for potential future vertical expansion.

A highlight of the project is the new 390m² commercial kitchen, which includes cold rooms, freezer rooms and restaurant-grade preparation areas. The expanded kitchen greatly increases service capacity and positions the club to handle future growth. New staff rooms and a storeroom were also delivered as part of the internal works.

Outside, the team constructed a 2,450m² carpark with drop-off areas and connected driveways. The upgrade added 64 parking bays, significantly improving access for patrons.

“We were excited to return to the Moranbah Community Workers Club, this time for a much larger upgrade,” said Rohrig Construction Manager, Elliot Sterling.

“Early engagement meant we could work with the client to improve the project’s viability, and it also allowed us to engage local trades and services, helping to support the regional economy. The end result is exceptional and sets the club up for continued success.”

The successful delivery of this project further reinforces Rohrig’s leadership in the hospitality sector. We are proud to partner with pubs, clubs and hotels to deliver functional, modern venues that communities will enjoy for years to come.
