Inspiring Learning Precinct at Canterbury College

1 April 2025

Rohrig recently completed a new multi-storey learning precinct at Canterbury College, which redefines the educational experience for the youngest students at the prestigious school.

The new Bareibun Precinct aims to enhance creativity, education and play for students. In fact, Bareibun means ‘to dream’ in the local Indigenous Yugambeh language.

This precinct was designed by education specialists Wilson Architects, who envisioned a facility that was both functional and visually inspiring. The use of round shapes throughout the building, from the circular elements in the facade to the curved retaining walls and shaped balustrades, creates a sense of wonder and inspiration, while a nature-filled outdoor learning area blends the cutting-edge design with nature.

The multi-story building and accompanying outdoor learning area offer a range of innovative spaces designed to stimulate curiosity and creativity. This precinct aims to provide students and educators with the facilities required to inspire and educate developing minds, consisting of; eight dedicated learning areas, a library, dance room, flexible learning rooms, and a STEM classroom.

A key feature of the precinct is the spacious covered outdoor learning area, named Nabei meaning ‘to play’. This versatile space is surrounded by immersive landscaping and is equipped with a projector and audio equipment to offer students a unique learning environment.

As is often the case with education projects, the Rohrig team was faced with the challenge of working within a live learning environment. To minimise disruption to students and staff, certain elements of construction were undertaken outside of school hours and rigorous safety measures, including high fencing and hoarding, were implemented to ensure the safety of everyone on site.

“We take safety seriously, but beyond that we aim to ensure that disruptions are kept to a minimum when working in a live environment like this one,” said Rohrig Construction Manager, Matthew Tucker.

“Being a school, it’s also important to ensure student, teacher and parent movements are not hindered. For this project we had a dedicated site vehicle entrance, to ensure deliveries and trades were separated from the school environment.”

The completion of the Bareibun Precinct marks a significant milestone for Canterbury College. This impressive new facility will enhance the learning experience for junior students and Rohrig is proud to have constructed the project.
