William Clarke College, Primary Building

Following Rohrig’s award-winning project on William Clarke College’s STEAM building, we repeated the successful partnership with the college and PDML Architecture for this primary building.

The 3-level GLA building with science labs and art rooms was integrated with two older buildings – a single storey hall and a 2-storey classroom. In addition to constructing the building itself, we designed and constructed new landscaping on the street frontage, footpaths, seating areas and a plant wall. There is tiered external seating and zig-zag ramps, which frame the building and create a feature area.

The school needed to continue to use the hall and neighbouring classrooms during construction and to access them through the construction site. Our high-level safety experience and careful planning made this possible.

A feature of the project was our early involvement with client and architect which meant we could identify risks and cost-saving options before construction began. One area of significant savings was on the acoustic sliding doors where a new product gave better value for money.

A further challenge of the project was the COVID environment and the disruption to building supplies. Our COVID protocols protected both school and our workforce. We were able to keep the site open throughout the construction and to source suitable materials to ensure the building was completed on time.
