International Grammar School, Renaissance Centre

Rohrig recently completed the fit-out of the Renaissance Centre at the International Grammar School (IGS) in Sydney, the centrepiece of the innovative global educational facility.

Across 38 weeks, the internal fit-out of a dilapidated building made way for a new lecture theatre, dance studio, seminar room, change rooms, staff rooms and informal learning spaces.

Design was handled by BVN Architecture, who conceptualised the modern learning space inline with the school’s modern requirements to form a standout building for students, parents and educators to enjoy.

Specific acoustic requirements will allow dance classes to be held in the new building, while curved theatre seating, sprung floor, custom-printed murals and exposed mechanical services round out the high-quality construction works.

The acoustic requirements meant the construction of a complex three-layer ceiling with stepped heights, unique due to its three-layer spring hanger design with integrated seismic restraints.

Early on in this project, it was established that remediation works would also be required to strengthen the structure, but strong working relationships with the client and architect meant the issue was resolved in a timely manner.

A significant 20% cost saving was achieved throughout this project, despite complex acoustic requirements and remediation works, a result of careful alternate material selection while maintaining the original design intent and quality finish.
