Saint Stephen’s College, Junior Hub

Rohrig is proud to have completed a two-storey Junior Hub at Saint Stephen’s College in Upper Coomera, Queensland, taking the school one step closer to achieving its new master plan.

Saint Stephen’s College is a Prep to Year 12 educator with a focus on the future, embodied in its new Junior Hub that aims to inspire Prep to Year Six students with interactive spaces and immersive design.

The Junior Hub was designed by Burling Brown Architects, offering adaptable learning spaces, a large multi-use hall, uniform store, and collaborative breakout spaces that merge with the landscaped outdoor area.

This building utilises an intricate steel ‘tree branch’ facade, as well as structural steel shaped like trees for the supporting columns. The tree theme forms the centrepiece of this contemporary design. It also features no less than five cladding materials, resulting in an exceptional finish that exceeds that which is normally found in schools.

External elements of this project included large-scale landscaping, sports field design, playground construction, tiered mosaic tile seating, and pathways connecting the outdoor and indoor spaces. A number of bridges also link the new Junior Hub with surrounding school buildings.

The Rohrig team worked closely with the client to address material availability issues for the facade, establishing an alternative steel option. We also undertook this project in a live school environment, requiring carefully planning and programming to ensure minimal disruptions to teachers, students and parents.
