Santa Sabina College, Covered Outdoor Learning Area

Rohrig is proud to have recently completed a new outdoor learning area and playground for the Junior School at Santa Sabina College, an independent Prep to Year 12 educator in Sydney’s inner west.

The project involved the design and construction of a new outdoor learning area and playground for the Prep to Year 4 students, alongside project manager Pier Property Corp and architect M3architecture, resulting in an all-weather facility that connects students with nature.

Rohrig commenced this project with the removal of the existing play area, before a new playground was built in its place featuring equipment from Denmark. The playground features unique design elements that aim to inspire and educate, like functional riverbeds and sandstone boulders with circular resin-filled cutouts displaying floating insects.

We then constructed an intricate footpath that threads through the outdoor learning area, shaped like a rosary bead necklace with prayers and donor plaques placed along the walkway. The learning area also features a louvre system that maximises natural light, for year-round comfort.

Throughout construction students were actively involved, with the placement of white A-Class hoarding that featured windows, and students were encouraged to paint the hoarding. The Rohrig Team also facilitated a walk-through of the site during construction, offering Prep to Year 4 students a glimpse into the construction process, as well as a Q&A session with the Project Team.

Our team ensured that the College was uninterrupted in its day-to-day activities throughout construction, restricting vehicle movements during pick-up and drop-off times, and careful programming ensured that inclement weather conditions did not impact progress.
