Rohrig takes out Master Builders NSW Excellence in Construction Award

We are thrilled to announce that we took out the Master Builders Association NSW Excellence in Construction Award (Private Schools: $15-20 Million), recognising our campus-wide refurbishment of St Edmund’s College in Wahroonga, New South Wales.

The prestigious NSW Excellence in Construction Awards were held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney on October 18, celebrating the remarkable achievements of the construction industry across the state.

Of course, our team was overjoyed to learn that we had been selected for the Excellence in Construction Award, which acted as a fitting acknowledgement of our enduring commitment to quality.

“We were surrounded by the industry’s top builders, so to be recognised amongst so many amazing finalists was a momentous achievement. We are committed to excellence here at Rohrig, so this award confirms the dedication our entire team carries into every project.” said Rohrig Construction Manager, Kyle Da Silva.

Enriching educational outcomes

Our work at St Edmund’s College in Wahroonga took the 74-year-old special needs school into the future, with a three-stage refurbishment that transformed 90 per cent of the campus.

The College was established by the Christian Brothers in 1951 and originally operated out of a converted two-story home that would become the Midhope building, catering to the needs of visually impaired boys. Over the years the college has expanded to cater to boys and girls with a range of sensory impairments and intellectual disabilities, but required an overhaul to accommodate a growing student base.

We completed this project across three stages, allowing staged handovers of learning areas as they were completed. This also ensured minimal disruption to students and educators, as we undertook this project in a live school environment.

The first stage involved the demolition of an existing building to make room for a new library with administration and general learning areas, as well as a porte cochere for student drop-offs and pick-ups.

Stage two began with the construction of a new car park, sports field, basketball court, student hall, and learning areas that are now being used for science, music and art education. We then connected the college to an existing stormwater system across the road, requiring us to bore a total of 107 metres.

Finally, the third stage included the renovation of the stunning heritage-listed Midhope building for use as an administration building. We were proud to return the federation mansion to its former glory. We even sprayed the building with volcanic ash, to achieve a period-correct finish.

Our partners in success

We would like to extend our congratulations and thanks to our clients, contractors and in-house team. Also, to Glendenning Szoboszlay Architects, who reimagined the college’s design, and project managers Midson Group, who oversaw works from start to finish.
